Travel: What To Pack for a Beach Vacation

I’m currently vacationing in sunny Florida! It’s super hot in Florida at the moment, and my friend Shannon and I have agreed that we should stick to a grueling schedule of beach-pool-beach-pool with some meals in between. Tough, yes. That’s how we roll when we’re in Florida! Of course, though, there’ll be days and nights of shopping trips, and we’re looking forward to a trip-within-a-trip to Sarasota. Oh – and we’ll be seeing two concerts while we’re here – Gwen Stefani and the Dave Matthews Band. Very cool. Good times ahead!

I’m a decent packer, and I generally have a good sense of what outfits I may need while I’m on vacation. That said, I sometimes pack more than I need and I don’t like lugging around useless weight. For this vacation, I wanted to pack light – absurdly light – because (a) I don’t wear much more than bathing suits while I’m here, (b) it’s too hot to wear more than a bathing suit, and (c) I’m hoping for a few sales which means I’ll be returning with a heavier luggage on my way home. I’m so good at supporting the American economy when I’m in Florida that I should really get a prize.

I’m (almost) ready to challenge myself to stick to a very strict colour scheme this trip. I’m starting with two navy/white bikinis that I picked up in Copenhagen last month from H&M. Most of my packing for this trip revolved around navy/white (quite a departure from the usual black and white, I know). Here’s what I considered (and just about ended up following through on) packing for this vacation (very similar items, not necessarily the exact items).

Two for Tuesday: Scallops

Hello again dear readers! Welcome back! I hope you didn’t mind the break. I meant to come back to the blog yesterday and share news about Copenhagen, but I was having issues with my photos, so my posts remain in draft form at the moment. They’re not quite ready to be published. Thanks in advance for your patience and I battle jet-lag and get my life reorganized after by 2+ week holiday. (Tough life, I know.)

For today, since it’s Tuesday, I’ll share two they’re-so-much-alike items. And since it’s summer (my favourite season), and the beach is nearly always on my mind, I thought I’d bring some scallops to the web pages of White Cabana.

Fashion: A Round-Up of My Current Fashion Faves

A few weeks ago, I bought a great outfit at Banana Republic, and it was so nice to add some new pieces to my wardrobe. I don’t go clothes shopping as often as I used to, I have to admit. This is partly because I don’t have time and partly because I don’t need or want anything specific (gosh, I sound so practical and boring, don’t I?).

Even still, I love to browse online and in stores (when I can) to see the new colours and collections each season. Here are some of the items that have recently caught my attention.

Two for Tuesday: White Lillies

I love having fresh flowers in my home. I’m good with just about any flower – carnations, hydrangeas, peonies, freesia, orchids, roses…you really can’t go wrong. Fresh flowers add elegance, joy, and sunshine to any room.

Since it’s spring, peonies are in full bloom, but I like today’s focus on the lily flower. Aren’t they both so pretty?

The Friday Five: Pretty White Dresses

I wore a white-on-white-on-white outfit last weekend, and I loved it. It’s such a fresh clean look, and it makes me feel super summery. Thinking of all-white summer ensembles prompted  me to browse through some of my favourite shops to see what white dresses they have to offer us this summer.

Fashion: Needham Lane’s Sleepwear Part II

Last month, I introduced you to Needham Lane’s sleepwear collection. I’ve been wearing my pj sets ever since they arrived, and they’re doing very well. The fabric is soft, the fit is good, and my sets have survived multiple turns through the washer and dryer. Yes, dryer, too.

I packed them up for my recent trip to Toronto, and my friend Shannon was kind enough to take some photos (she found her inner Nigel Barker-noted fashion photographer). While I know models prepare for photoshoots with the help of a hair, makeup, and styling team, I prepared by waking up, brushing my teeth, and brushing my hair. I opted for a low-fuss, au naturel approach (did I have a choice?).

I actually slept in the Maxwell long sleeve pajama, and I wear this one regularly because I like the long sleeves and pants. I like the black and white checkered pattern, too.

(I’m only pretending – did I fool you?)White-Cabana-Needham-Lane-5

In addition to the checked long sleeve set, Needham Lane sent over the Madison fuchsia short sleeve capri pajama. It’s hard to resist a crisp white set, and I like the punch of fuchsia. The pants have a fuchsia drawstring, but I’d recommend that Needham Lane look into adding fuchsia piping on the pant cuff too.

I couldn’t resist jumping in my PJs (let’s just call this my morning exercise routine)

I also brought along the Pippa aqua kimono robe. The robe is white, but it has aqua piping around the edges and cuffs. If you’re not into white, I’d encourage you to look into all the other colourful robes at Needham Lane. This would make such a nice gift for Mother’s Day or a friend’s birthday. The Pippa might just become my new go-to travel robe. It’s easy to throw into luggage, and it adds an additional layer of comfort when you’re away from home. I basically danced around in it for the photos…

I should let you know that although Needham Lane has a large selection of colourful sleepwear (not everything is black and white). And the last chance section has some incredible deals at the moment (e.g., this cornflower blue pajama is only $20). Shipping to USA is $5 and to Canada is $20. Finally, if you sign up to Needham Lane via email, you’ll get a 20% off coupon code. Bonus!

Many thanks to Needham Lane for sponsoring this post. All opinions are my own. Thanks to Shannon Y. for snapping these photos. Location: Omni King Edward hotel, Toronto.

Two for Tuesday: Ruffles

What’s prettier or more feminine than ruffles? Okay, maybe hearts and bows, but ruffles are still at the top of the femininity list, right? They’re great for your wardrobe and your home as you can see by today’s two-for-Tuesday.

Fashion: So Many Stripes

Just until about 3 or 4 years ago (or maybe 5?), I completely avoided stripes in my wardrobe. If something had stripes on it, I’d look the other way. Nowadays, though, I can’t resist them. Mostly, I go for the horizontal variety, but I also look for something a bit unusual (e.g., I loved this Banana Republic top as soon as I put it on).

Here are several stripes that caught my eye.

The Friday Five: 5 Spring Must-Haves from L.L.Bean

Yes, it’s true, I’m a newbie fan of L.L.Bean, and there’s no turning back. I have been so extremely happy with the quality and design of the items I have received in the last few months. Now that the weather has warmed up slightly, I’ve hung up the long 850 DownTek coat (except when it suddenly gets cold), and I’ve been wearing the Maine Lodge 850 DownTek Hoodie almost daily. So many people have complimented me on it, too, and it seems like they’ve been surprised that it’s an L.L.Bean jacket. Their curiosity has been piqued! In addition, my black L.L.Bean skinny jeans have been put through the washer and dryer on a weekly basis, and they’re still holding their quality and shape. Good news!

So today I thought I’d share with you my top five must-haves for spring from L.L.Bean.

Two for Tuesday: Lizard Patterns

Did everyone have a nice long weekend? I just ended a glorious 5-day weekend! It started with a surprise snow day on Thursday (say what!?), which meant that (basically) the Waterloo region shut down. We had a crazy ice storm, and I was happy to get some random, minor projects done around my home and then embrace my lazy side.

Friday, my new bed arrived (oh my goodness – it’s so. darn. glorious.). I’ll share photos in the months ahead once I (finally) buy a new mattress (any suggestions?), upgrade my nightstands, and buy the perfect bedside lamps. This is the Year of My Bed, and this makes me happy!

Saturday and Sunday was family time…which involved a lot of food and loud discussions.

I took Monday off, too, and with the weather so dreary, I was in the mood for a few errands and a lot of nothing.

And this brings us to Tuesday…time for a two-for-Tuesday comparison! Today it’s all about texture!

Fashion: Star Wars Booties

I don’t know anything about Star Wars. In fact, anything I do know about it, I’ve learned from my nephews and niece (who are 6, 5, 4, and 2.5 years old). My 2.5 year old niece sings some random (or maybe not so random) Darth Vader song, and her three older brothers are thrilled when they dress up in their Star Wars costumes (year-round) and run around the house with lightsabers (is that what they’re called?). So when I saw these booties, I instantly sent the link to my sister, as I know that if she wore them, her kids would surely think she was the coolest mom around.

They’re wild, aren’t they?

The boots are made by the UK brand Irregular Choice, and the company has a whole line of Star Wars footwear. The CP3O flats caught my attention – because they’re gold – not because I know anything about CP3O.

The Friday Five: Needham Lane’s Sleepwear

You say pyjama. I say pajama. Pyjama. Pajama. … I couldn’t help but start this post with that line! I hope it got you singing along (if not, watch this or that)!

Who doesn’t love a new pyjama? Am I right? I adore pyjama sets, and so when I happened upon Needham Lane‘s many pyjama sets, I was easily drawn into its website. The Massachusetts-based company makes apparel, sleepwear, and accessories in lovely fabrics and patterns. When I dug a little deeper, I learned that Needham Lane is just a hop-skip-and-jump away from a camp I used to work at in the Berkshires. Not only that, but when I got chatting with the owners, we realized that we are also connected via southwestern Ontario. Small world, I say!

But enough about our connections, let me just show you five of my top picks from Needham Lane‘s current sleepwear collection, okay?

They’re pretty and delicate, aren’t they? I’m not the only one to think so! Needham Lane has been featured in many popular print publications, including O Magazine, Self, Vogue Latin America, and People (see more press).

In addition to its sleepwear line, Needham lane has colourful accessories (apparently the slippers are quite popular) and pretty vacation-worthy apparel (e.g., this tunic).

Needham Lane sent over a few items for me to try (thanks, Needham Lane!), so I can vouch for the fabric, fit, and style. The pyjamas are made in India of soft, delicate fabrics; the detailing – e.g., cuff sleeves, piping – really add to the interest of the sets. In the weeks ahead, I’ll share a bit more about Needham Lane, so stay tuned.

Marketplace: Spring at TJX Canada

Many of you most likely know that Winners, HomeSense, and Marshalls brands are united under the TJX Canada umbrella. I don’t know about you, but I make just-about-weekly visits to one, if not all three, of these stores. The deals are great, the selection is diverse, and I generally find what I’m looking for…and then some.

If you’re eager for spring’s arrival, it might be wise to pay a visit to one of these stores to start your spring shopping. While the selection varies in each store, I’m sure you’ll find something on trend for your home or wardrobe.

The Friday Five: 5 Ways to Style Black Jeans

I wear a lot of black. As in, I wear black just about every single day. And on the days that I don’t wear black, I wear white. Black and white. White and black. This is my basic uniform. While some of you colour-loving readers might think I live a boring fashion life, I would completely disagree. I jazz things up with textures, layers, and accessories.

You know I’ve been working with L.L.Bean this year, and I was thrilled to try out their signature skinny jeans. After I received them, I wore them for three days straight, which basically sums up how I feel about them. I love them. They sit a little higher on the waist, they have plenty of stretch (but do not stretch out), they have a slim leg, and the back pockets are perfectly placed. They have washed well so far (I hang them to dry), and they keep their shape. Needless to say, I have no complaints at all. If you’re in between sizes according to the L.L.Bean sizing chart, I would go for the larger size as these are a skinny fit, and you don’t want them to be totally uncomfortably tight.

White-Cabana-LLBean-jeans

I’m wearing*: L.L.Bean signature skinny jeans c/o, ruffle trim sweater, boots (similar)

Considering how often I wear black jeans (and I imagine you might, too), I thought I’d share five ways to style a sharp pair of black jeans.

Second: Casual Confidence: black jeans paired with classic Converse and a hoodie

Five: Rock and Roll: black jeans paired with stripes and leather

Fashion: Iris Apfel for Kate Spade

The lady with the glasses. That’s how I know many people describe Iris Apfel. She’s been in the fashion and design industries for just about ever. While I’ve known a bit about her for a while now, I didn’t really know what she did – or still does – in fashion and design until I watched the Iris Apfel documentary and learned quite a bit.

Iris is such an eclectic lady who has quite the collection of clothes and jewelry. I’m impressed at how she stacks her necklaces and bangles and everything just magically works. Her style is completely unique.

It’s rare (as far as I can tell) to see Iris in an all-white ensemble because she’s all about colour, but she’s all-in-white in Kate Spade’s spring campaign. So fun!

Fashion: Review of L.L. Bean’s 850 Downtek Coat

I take my coat purchases very seriously. I’m not a fan of winter, I don’t like to be cold for even a minute, and I spend quite a bit of time outdoors because I walk to work/grocery store/cafés/etc. Coats can also be quite a pricey investment.

Many years ago, I bought this black puffy coat in New York City, and it was my “duty” coat as in I needed a super warm coat to carry out my yard duty responsibility when I was teaching at an elementary school. The coat is intense. It looks like I’m wearing a sleeping bag. I loved that coat even though I looked ridiculous! A couple of years ago, the zipper broke, and I never got around to getting it fixed. I made do with the button closures.

In my puffy coat purchases, this gold coat came next. It’s been a decent replacement. It’s not as long as the black coat, but it’s very warm, and it’s gold! While I do love black, I like having non-black coats in the winter. I love the high collar on this coat and the asymmetrical zipper. The problems with this coat, though, are that it doesn’t have a hood and it’s too big.

Since I was in need of a new functional winter coat, L.L. Bean generously sent over its Ultralight 850 Downtek coat (long version). Since I’m quite a picky customer when it comes to coats (if you couldn’t already tell), I thought it might be helpful to my readers and to L.L. Bean if I did a full review of this coat. Here. We. Go.

The Ultralight 850 Downtek coat comes in black, plum, blue, and shadow. I opted for the shadow.

LLbean-downtek-long-coat-ultralight-850

L.L.Bean’s Ultralight 850 Downtek coat in shadow, $219 USD (on sale)

The first thing I noticed about the 850 Downtek was the colour. It’s honestly a bit hard to describe. Sometimes, the coat looks like the colour in the photo on L.L.Bean’s website – silvery grey. Other times, it looks more white. And yet at other times, it looks like it’s icy blue. This is making me consider possible scarf set options. So far, I think black or cream works best with it, but I think the right shade of fuchsia will also go nicely (basically, it’ll look like I’m wearing my basement decor).

When I pulled the coat out of the box, I was amazed by its lightness. It is SO light! My black sleeping bag coat is heavy, and my gold puffy coat isn’t much lighter. The 850 is just as it’s advertised – ultralight! It feels like I’m wearing an extra sweater rather than a super warm puffy coat. You know? I was completely shocked! Puffy coat technology has completely improved in the last few years.

Once I put on the coat and started wearing it, I noticed a bunch of amazing and useful design details.

The hood tightening system. I used the hood one evening when it was raining and I forgot my umbrella. The hood came in very handy, and since it was also quite windy, I used the pulls to tighten the hood so that it wouldn’t blow off. I was impressed. (Look at me – dealing with the elements!)

White-Cabana-LLBean-850 Downtek-long-4

The arm hem sleeve details. One side is elasticized, but the other is plain. I think this is a nice detail. It keeps the cuff tight (doesn’t let the air in), but it doesn’t cut off my circulation with a too-tight elastic closure.

White-Cabana-LLBean-850 Downtek-long-7

The two-way zipper. I adore this feature, and I use it when I’m walking (and I want to make super long strides), but I mostly use it when I’m driving since unzipping from the bottom makes it easy to get in and out of the car, and reduces the risk of ripping the coat or zipper.

White-Cabana-LLBean-850 Downtek-long-8

The length. I’m 5’4″, so the length is exactly what I wanted, but it’s definitely longer on me than it is on the model in this photo. This is not a knee-length coat on me, it’s more of a mid-calf length.

The inside pocket. I’m glad this exists because when I don’t carry my purse, I make good use of the pockets. This extra interior pocket was a good design move.

The zipper pulls. Sometimes it’s the littlest things that make the biggest difference. In this case, the zipper pulls make zipping up the coat and pockets very easy when I’m wearing my gloves. Plain zippers are too slipper and small, and they make me annoyed. These little rubber-ended pulls are easy to use.

White-Cabana-LLBean-850 Downtek-long-5

Warmth factor. Okay. So the coat definitely keeps me warm. It hasn’t been brutally cold, and I think the coldest it’s been has been -5C, but the coat has kept me very comfortable on my walking commute as well as in a cold arena while I sat and watched Skate Canada’s synchronized figure skating event.

White-Cabana-LLBean-850 Downtek-long-6

The 850 refers to the goose down insulation, and the DownTEKâ„¢ is a treatment to insure water-resistance. This is one of L.L. Bean’s warmest coats for women, and it will keep me warm up to -30F (-34C…is that the right conversion?).

And, finally, here’s what I look like in the coat (paired with black, of course):

White-Cabana-LLBean-850 Downtek-long-1 White-Cabana-LLBean-850 Downtek-long-2

White-Cabana-LLBean-850 Downtek-long-3

L.L. Bean 850 Downtek coat – long c/o, L.L. Bean Signature black skinny jeans, modern fit c/o, Gap booties, leather gloves (old), scarf (old)

I’m wearing a size medium, but I’m sure the small would have worked out well, too. As with my wellies, I used L.L.Bean’s size guide, and I found it to be quite helpful. I can easily add a bulky sweater underneath this coat, and it would still be comfortable.

Thanks, Shannon, for the photo shoot! Photos by me and Shannon. Thanks again to L.L. Bean for sending me this coat. All opinions are my own.

Design: From Home to Fashion

I love design, and I love fashion, so why not bring them together? Today, I took a room and turned it into an outfit by looking at some of the key elements in the space.

This living room has a strong, but light base with white walls, airy shelves, and a grey slouchy couch. A black leather egg chair and a pair of sleek side chairs inject the space with sleekness, and the round side table brings in welcomed warmth.

b2692b31845869.56631e0511160

via Behance

With the room analysis, it was easy enough to transform it into an outfit. I began with a light base of grey and white and brought in softness with the coat. The super sleek cut-out booties are reminiscent of the leather egg chair, and the necklace brings in the airiness of the bookshelf. The leather tote brings in the warmth just as the side table did in the living room.

If you’re ever stuck on what to wear, go ahead and draw inspiration from your own living space (home design magazines work well, too!).

Fashion: My L.L.Bean Outfit Plans

I’m thrilled to be working with L.L.Bean again this month. After my I’m-such-a-happy-customer, and my-wellies-are-working-out-great experience with L.L.Bean a couple of months ago, we have decided to work together again.

Now, let me be honest with you. L.L.Bean has been a go-to spot for luggage (I own this,  love it, and have traveled with it a lot) and luggage accessories (packers like these have come in very handy over many years), but I haven’t spent too much time looking beyond their luggage section. I was under the impression that the merchandise was too outdoorsy or rugged or preppy for me, if that makes any sense. I don’t canoe. I don’t snowshoe. I don’t live in Maine. You know what I mean?

But, when I was preparing my wellie review posts (here and here), I dove deeper into the website, and I realized that L.L.Bean does have quite a bit to offer a young*, hip**, fashion-conscious, non-canoeing gal such as myself. As I did more research (I’m all about doing a lot of research), I learned, from random face-to-face discussions to online Twitter conversations to fellow bloggers’ posts, that L.L.Bean has quite the following, and people really do seem to value the brand and the quality of its products. As such, I was happy to hit the drawing board to put together some more L.L.Bean outfits that would suit my lifestyle.

Outfit 1: Weekend Errands

This first black and white look is comfortable for running errands and polished enough to join a friend for lunch. The tailored jogger pants (if there is such a thing) are still on trend, and the watch and customizable tote are classic L.L.Bean.

LLbean-White-Cabana-style-2

jacket, boots, watch, pants, top, cardigan, tote

Outfit 2: Activity Time

I love every piece that I used in this black and white outfit. This will take you to and from the gym with maybe a pop-in to the grocery store in between. The puffy coat is not too puffy, and I’ve been a long-time fan of Superga sneakers, so it’s nice to see them offered at L.L.Bean. The sweatshirt is perfect for long winter walks.LLbean-White-Cabana-style-3

sweatshirt, backpack, coat, gloves, sunglasses, travel mug, pants, sneakers

Outfit 3: Casual Luxury Friday

While casual luxury may be seen as a contradiction, it perfectly describes this third black and white outfit. While at first glance, this look is casual because of the jeans, it is also luxurious. The sweater is cashmere, the gloves are leather, and the booties are from Corso Como. The outfit could easily take you (or take me!) from the office to dinner on a casual Friday.

LLbean-White-Cabana-style-1

coat, sweater, jeans, gloves, belt, clutch, boots

What do you think of the outfits? Are you surprised these pieces are from L.L.Bean, or is this what you have come to expect from the brand?

Finally, to end this post on a super (super, super, super) sweet note, let’s have a look at my sweet (sweet, sweet, sweet) nephew up on the massive Bean boot at the L.L.Bean headquarters in Maine a few years ago.

White-Cabana-LLBean-HQ

While I haven’t been to the L.L.Bean HQ in Freeport, Maine, my sister and her family have. My nephews have seen the giant boot before me! While they don’t quite fit the rugged outdoorsy mold (we are part of the same family, remember?), they’re definitely an L.L.Bean family, and they’re the people who got me hooked on the luggage in the first place many years ago! Also, they own a canoe. Go figure.

* Of course I’m young! I’d rather not think any other way.
**
Of course I’m hip, too. I’m not sure my university students would agree with me though.

Fashion: Workout Wear

Okay, so now that I’ve had one workout session at Hourglass, I feel that it’s about the right time to see what’s new in the world of workout wear.

Design: The Buffalo Check Trend

What’s black and white and square all over? Buffalo check, of course! While the pattern does come in just about every colour, I’m obviously most drawn to the black/white/grey versions.

It seems like buffalo check just emerged on the design scene within days. Seemingly suddenly, I’m seeing this pattern on everything from chairs to table cloths to settees to clothing.

Buffalo check works with a lot of existing styles – traditional, modern, country, shabby chic – as you’ll see in the interiors below.

Fashion: My L.L.Bean Wellie Review

Last month, I reached out to American classic L.L.Bean to inquire about their rain boot collection, and I’m grateful to L.L.Bean for sending me a pair of their tall black wellies and wellie warmers. When I prepared this style post, I hadn’t yet worn my wellies too much, so I couldn’t do a full review. Now, though, since the arrival of quite a bit of rain and slush, I have plenty more to say! Care to read on?

As I mentioned in my last post, I was completely impressed with L.L.Bean’s social media team, PR pro, and online chat personnel. I received excellent and speedy customer service, and my initial reactions were positive. I do already own an L.L.Bean personalized duffle bag, and it has passed many tests over the years, so I had high hopes for the boots. Thankfully, things are working out very well!

White-Cabana-Wellie_rain Boots_LLBean-2Here I am on one grey rainy December day wearing my L.L. Bean wellies. I paired them with leather-detailed pants, layered black tops, and a classic Longchamp bag.

The boots fit my foot perfectly, and they’re very comfortable for walking around. I do walk a lot (to work, to the grocery store, to the library, to cafés, etc.), so I’m not lying when I tell you that they’re comfortable for walking (as much as walking in the rain is comfortable – ha!).

White-Cabana-Wellie_rain Boots_LLBean-1I still feel put together even thought I’m wearing rain boots.

When I originally placed my order, I wasn’t 100% certain that the boot would fit comfortably over my calf (I do have issues with this with some companies). After asking the online chat person about the sizing, I felt more confident. The boots do fit over my calf easily – even with the wellie sock – and the elastic feature on the back increase the comfort level. The boots sort of just move with me as I walk if that makes any sense. The fit is true to size. I’m normally a size 8, and I ordered size 8, and they even fit well when I wear  the wellie sock.

White-Cabana-LLBean_2back elastic feature

There are loops at the top of either side of the boot, and I hang on to these as I pull the boots on. Easy.

White-Cabana-LLBean_1

loop detail

Another feature I surprisingly like is the buckle detail across the top/side of the foot part of the boot. These make the boots feel unique, substantial, and a bit rock-and-roll.

White-Cabana-LLBean_3the buckle

The sole is thick and sturdy, and I feel very stable as I walk through puddles or slush (you can see evidence of those puddles right there on my boots).

Finally, the boots come in at a fair price point considering the rain boot market. The boots are $89US, and the wellie warmer socks are $24.95. L.L.Bean offers free shipping and an unbeatable guarantee, which are bonuses in my mind.

So, as you can gather, I have only positive things to report about my new wellies. They get my stamp of approval!

White-Cabana-Wellie_rain Boots_LLBean-3Let’s all take another moment to stare at the boots, shall we?

Many thanks to Rox-Anne for taking these photos during one random post-café-meeting photo shoot! Boot photos by me.

Movies: Dior and I

I watched Dior and I the other night – a documentary about the House of Dior and Raf Simon’s journey of his first couture collection. The movie gives us the backstage pass to the atelier, and I loved it. Those ladies and men who do all the beautiful hand stitching is incredibly impressive, and, of course, it was interesting to see Raf Simon’s approach to fashion design. On top of this, the movie is in French, and so I got to enjoy the language for a couple of hours.

Fashion: L.L.Bean Wellies

A few weeks ago, I noticed that the seam on one of my (insert name of famous brand) rain boots had come apart. Not a cut, not a rip, but an actual seam ungluing (I know that’s not a word, but hopefully you know what I mean). I was disappointed with my interaction with the company’s customer service department, and I received no response from the PR person. So…let’s just say that I’ve left that company very unimpressed.

But, this story has a very happy ending, so please read on…

After putting the call out on Twitter for rain boot recommendations, Meagan (Row House Nest) let me know that she has had amazing experience with L.L.Bean, and L.L.Bean’s Twitter person responded, too. Within minutes, I was browsing L.L.Bean’s wellie selection (and then got side-tracked by the luggage*, as one does!). When I reached out to L.L.Bean, the company generously offered to send over a pair of boots and wellie socks, and I was thrilled!

LLBean-wellie-rain boots LLBean-wellie-warmersI opted for the tall black version, although I think the brown wellies are quite nice for fall

I used L.L.Bean‘s online customer service chat function a couple of times before I placed my order because I wanted to be sure I was ordering the right size. The service personnel were efficient, pleasant, and professional. My questions were answered in no-time.

Did you know that L.L.Bean now delivers to Canada for free? I think this is amazing news. My rain boots were delivered right to my doorstep within just a few short days. The size was true to what I learned on the website and via the customer service chat.

Everything about this transaction was so smooth (and I’m not just saying that because I have a new pair of wellies to wear), and I’m happy to share my experiences with you.

Some companies just get it, you know?**

Anyhoo, so, now that I have a new pair of wellie rain boots and wellie warmers, I thought it might be appropriate to put together some L.L.Bean fantasy outfits.

LLBean-White-Cabana-1outfit 1: ultra warm coat – long, French sailor’s shirt, ultrawarm hat, ultrawarm mittens, corduroy pantsLLBean-White-Cabana-2outfit 2: signature ponte leggings, pima cotton cardigan, pima cotton tee long sleeve crewneck, boat and tote, heritage wool mittens, ultrawarm hatLLBean-White-Cabana-3outfit 3: signature print tee, corduroy pants,  adventure duffle, ultralight 850 down coat, fitbit, polartech touchscreen gloves

Even for the not-so-outdoorsy-or-adventurous person (ahem – me), I could definitely see myself in these L.L.Bean outfits. They’d be good for casual walks or social visits. What do you think?

* I have owned this rolling duffle bag for years now, and it’s served me extremely well. I’d highly recommend it.
** I’m even more picky about companies and customer service now that I’m doing an MBA degree. My expectations were always high, but they’re even higher now. I’m can definitely be a tough one to please!

Thanks to L.L.Bean for sponsoring this post. All opinions are my own.

Fashion: The White Puffy Coat

We are heading into puffy coat season here in Waterloo. Each year, I’m on the look out for a new winter coat (I get so tired of mine by the end of a season). Sometimes I get lucky and I invest in something new, but this doesn’t happen every year. Coats are definitely an investment. Now with the brand names and the high-tech fabrics, winter coats can get pricey. Here’s just a small selection of some of the white puffers that are in the marketplace.

I read about luxury boutique Fivestory in Elle Decor‘s October issue, and I was enticed to browse through its online collection. Fivestory, owned by Clare Distenfeld, is located on Manhattan’s upper east side and it caters to those looking for diverse high-end  brands including Roland Mouret, Alexander Wang, Nicholas Kirkwood, and Rosie Assoulin.

Before I share some of the shop’s collection, let’s just have a quick look at the sleek interior of the 5-story (get it?) townhouse.

The Friday Five: Classic Karl Lagerfeld

It’s amazing how some people’s style is so instantly recognizable. Karl Lagerfeld, for example, is so distinguishable because of his white ponytail-tied hair, dark sunglasses, high-collared shirts, gloves, and random chain accessories.

I laughed quite a bit while I was researching items to include in today’s Karl-centred post. Could you imagine your face as the object of a bag, for example? Have a look…

Fashion: TYR Swimwear

I have been wearing TYR swimsuits since I was 16 and working as a lifeguard and swim instructor. 20 years later (yes, 20!), I’m still wearing TYR. A few years ago, I picked up a gorgeous TYR bikini that is both fashionable and comfortable. Really comfortable, in fact.

I reached out to TYR recently and the company was kind enough to send me two swimsuits. (Thanks, TYR!) I received this one in blue/coral (this sizing chart worked beautifully) and this black and white one (I should have gone up one size in the criss-cross back top and hipkini bottom; I adore the mesh details):

TMTM1A-060_3Milos Isle Kai mesh bikini top, $22.99

BMB1A-060_3Milos Isle Lilou mesh hipkini, $24.99

I just love the pattern, and I was completely surprised by how much I love the coral/blue version. The fit of the Enna bikini top and Suki bikini bottom is perfect for me.

Of course, TYR has much more to offer than a fashionable bikini line. Its athletic suits are certainly well-made and ready for performance.

Fashion: Packing for a Beach Vacation

I am counting down the days until I’ll be on a Floridian beach doing just about nothing. I am very much looking forward to shutting down for a few weeks and living a life filled with sunscreen, ice cream, and outlet shopping.

I don’t pack a lot when I go down to Florida, but here is a glimpse into what I’ll be packing for my low-key beach wardrobe.

beach-travel-what to pack1. A straw hat is great for the beach and for walking around town. It protects your face from the hot hot sun, and it adds instant style to any outfit. (floppy hat, $38, American Apparel)

2. Flip flops are a must for Florida. I pack a couple of pairs of Havaianas because they’re comfortable. (white flip flops,  $32, Havaianas)

3. A lightweight carry on luggage is a must for any trip. I have been using Le Sportsac’s weekender for many years now, and it has definitely been worth the investment. (large weekender bag, $142, Le SportSac)

4. A new bikini makes every beach trip better. Thanks to TYR, I’ll be uber comfortable and stylish in this black and white number. (Milos Isle Kai mesh top, $29.99 and Lilou mesh hipkini, $24.99, TYR)

5. An easy dress that can be used as a coverup is definitely worth packing. I love a good multi-tasking piece of clothing. (linen tee dress, $49, Joe Fresh)

6. I don’t wear much jewelery at all when I’m in Florida, so a cute pair of studs can go a long way. Wear them with a simple dress, and the put-together-factor instantly increases. (care to dance stud earrings, $68, Kate Spade)

7. An easy-to-wash pair of white shorts is another must-pack item for me. While I have yet to buy a pair of good white jeans, I do have white shorts that I’ll be wearing all summer long. (white shorts, $12, Old Navy)

8. Waiting for luggage to come out on the airport conveyor belt stressed me out. I never actually feel confident that my luggage will arrive. Adding an easy-to-spot fun luggage tag to my bag is definitely useful. (luggage tag, $14, Kate Spade)

9. For several years now, my friend Shannon and I have been hitting up Tropicana Field to watch the Tampa Bay Rays play against the Toronto Blue Jays. Honestly, I don’t know much about baseball, but watching games in Florida is definitely fun. Buying tickets is easy, and the field is air-conditioned. I bring along my baseball cap to show support. (This year, the Jays won’t be in town while I’m there, but I’ll wear my cap regardless. (Blue Jays baseball cap, $29.99)

10. A dress that can move from day-to-night is yet another thing I’ll be packing. I really like this inexpensive striped one from Old Navy. (jersey swing dress, $13.50, Old Navy)

What essentials do you add to your suitcase when traveling to the beach? I’d love to know.

Design: News from Italy

My dad is currently nearing the end of a vacation in Italy. He was there to reunite with his highschool friends whom he has not seen or spoken to in 50 years. 50! Last year, one of his highschool friends found him on Facebook. Facebook! They chatted online, then over email, then on Skype. So cool. When his friends told him that the highschool friends were having a reunion this year, Dad booked his flight. Can you imagine – a reconnection after 50 years? I think it’s absolutely amazing.

While he was away, my dad texted me almost daily photos of La Dolce Vita. He succeeded in making me jealous, that’s for sure. He’s such a little blogger-in-training! He sent photos of food, countryside, and even a Thonet-ish bentwood chair. He also sent specific photos for White Cabana. Gosh, I feel so proud! He actually reads my blog…and listens to me when I talk about fashion, design, and art!

Here’s a bit of Italy through Dad’s iPad/iPhone, if you’d like to see.

The Richard Ginori brand is well-known in Italy, and dad must have been listening to conversations between my mom and me about the brand. In preparing this post, I learned that the company was going bankrupt in 2013, and it was bought by Gucci. The Richard Ginori collection on display in a window in Firenze (Florence) are very White Cabana worthy.

White-Cabana-Dad-Italy-8White-Cabana-Dad-Italy-9Dad texted this photo from Gubbio (in Umbria), and at first, I wondered why there were two holes in the back of the chair.White-Cabana-Dad-Italy-1But then he sent this one, and I understood.   White-Cabana-Dad-Italy-2He also sent along a few fashion photos (he listens to me, he really listens!). It seems to me that white is the colour of Italian fashion this summer. The photos are from Firenze (Florence) and Sansepolcro (in Tuscany). Bravo!White-Cabana-Dad-Italy-6White-Cabana-Dad-Italy-4White-Cabana-Dad-Italy-5 White-Cabana-Dad-Italy-3A few more photos might trickle in. From what I gather, dad’s been having a grand ol’ time (I’ll spare you the daily gelato and pasta photos).

I was curious to see what items were actually made in the south (or in the USA), and I didn’t find too many. I feel as if production was in the USA, this would really be an American brand. Don’t you?

Art: Kirsty Mitchell Photography

My sister recently sent me a link to Kirsty Mitchell‘s work, and I was completely blown away. You will be, too! For her Wonderland series of photos, Kristy designed and created incredibly intricate props and costumes, then styled elaborate sets for her models. Her photographs are magical, fantastical, and very dreamy. Here’s a peek at some of the white costumes and props (made from fans) from her Wonderland series:

If you are amazed by this, your jaw will drop when you watch the behind-the-scenes films, and flip through all of the photographs online. I spent more time than I’d like to admit trying to take it all in.

Thanks to Corie for sending this my way.
