En Français: 5 French Scarf Stores to Know

Of all the quintessential clothing items loved by the French, I think the foulard tops the list. The French have the best scarf options for year-round wear. A multitude of textures, textiles, patterns, and prints are available for purchase in countless stores around France. In Paris, here’s where I recommend you look for a special scarf.

Museum shops (e.g., at the Louvre or Centre Pompidou) are great places to purchase a scarf because the scarves here are unique, artsy, and interesting. En plus, it’s unlikely that you can get the same scarf anywhere else.

Department stores like Galeries Lafayette and Printemps are great options, too, because their scarf selections are so large.

Luxury brands like Hermès and Chanel have an incredible selection of classic scarves that will with you for years!

You might know the French brand Longchamp because of its gorgeous purses and luggage, but its scarves deserve attention, too. Many designs include an equestrian theme, but in the current collection, there are a few French designs that are sure to remind you of your Parisian vacation.

If you’re looking for a scarf that won’t put a dent in your budget, you might want to step into Monoprix to see what it has to offer. Monoprix is part-grocery store, part-home store, and part-clothing store. You can get a ton of shopping done at affordable prices here.

En Français: 5 French Clothing Brands To Know

It’s French week here on White Cabana. What does this mean exactly? Well, I’m writing about French fashion, food, and design every day this week. Great idea, right? Oui! If you’re anything like me, then you’ll appreciate the fine French beauty that comes with each of these categories.

So today I’m sharing some French clothing brands (minus one jewelry brand) that you may/may not have seen in your online and real-life travels. I’m featuring the more affordable side of France rather than the luxury brands that you may associate with France – like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Goyard, Longchamp, and Hermes.

On y va? Shall we get started?

Sézane seems to be a new favourite among New Yorkers as much as it is with French women. And perhaps others world-wide, too. As for me? While I have yet to experience Sézane up-close, from afar, I appreciate the delicate details of the company’s collection each season.

Étam has been one of my stops during every trip I’ve ever taken to Paris. I love the price points and the commitment to bringing on-trend items to the marketpace. They have the prettiest lingerie sets, and the company’s loungewear and sleepwear are sweet.

Princess Tam Tam is another shop to stop into on any trip to France if you’re looking for more cute pyjama sets or underthings.

Agatha is the place to go to if you’re shopping for some jewelry. Many years ago, my mom bought me a classic silver bangle from here, and I continue to wear it nearly daily. It reminds me of our time together touring Paris. The Scottie is Agatha’s mascot, so there are many pieces with it on them. And, yes, I know Agatha doesn’t fit into the clothing category, but let’s be a touch flexible with the rules, shall we?

Comptoir des Cotonniers always has a perfect-for-me collection of easy to wear, classic pieces for work and leisure.

Two for Tuesday: The Wrap Coat

I bought my camel wrap coat many years ago. A decade maybe. It’s been a while, and I love wearing it every fall and winter. Although it’s vintage and tagless, it’s a classic coat, so it looks modern every year. I like pairing it with black and cream, naturally, but it also looks great with plaid or a solid, vibrant colour.

If you’re looking for a similar coat, this one from Cuyana looks nearly identical to mind.

Fashion: A Reitmans Refresh

Reitmans. If you’re like me, you might be wondering, how have I just become an adult who shops at Reitmans? In all honesty, I rarely went into Reitmans. Often, I walked right past it in the malls unless something in the window caught my eye. The store was never on my must-go-in-and-shop list. But then Meghan Markle (pre-Duchess status) collaborated with the brand, and I started to take notice. I thought, hmm, that’s curious. What’s going on with Reitmans these days? And then I started getting press info in my inbox, and I continued to take notice. Some of the suiting pieces looked great, and the patterns and colours were modern. And then my friend raved about some of her activewear pieces from a brand called Hyba, which I later learned was part of Reitmans. I hadn’t expected it, but it was happening. I was paying way more attention to Reitmans than I had ever before. Can anyone relate?

I opted to learn more about the brand before I responded to any press emails. Reitmans Canada Ltd., I learned (or refreshed my memory), is a Canadian company that also includes Additional Elle, Penningtons, RW&Co., Thyme, and Hyba. The company was founded in 1926 by Herman and Sarah Reitman with one woman’s clothing store on Boulevard St. Laurent in Montreal, and it now operates 642 stores in addition to e-commerce channels. While it started off as a family-owned and operated company, it is now listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX: RET; RET-A). The grandchildren of the original owners are still involved in the company with Jeremy H. Reitman serving as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, and Stephen F. Reitman serving as the President and Chief Operating Officer. An interesting history, eh? I like that there’s still a family connection within this long-running public company.

Under the direction of President Jacqueline Tardif, Reitmans seems to be on the right track by offering women a variety of options for work and leisure at affordable price points.

The goal of its current campaign is to celebrate real women and “relatable moments that occur in our regular lives.” (If you’d like, check out the behind the scenes of the Reitmans’ Really You campaign.) Reitmans was kind to send over a few pieces that I have already worn multiple times, washed, ironed, and packed up for my holiday trip to Toronto. So far, so good. The pieces fit well and definitely suit my lifestyle.

The Original Comfort Straight Leg Jean surprised me as they’re pull-jeans without a traditional zip fly. I thought they might be too “jegging” for me, but they’re not. They feel like a classic jeans because of their weight, so I have been happily wearing them. Comfort level is high with these ones!

When I pulled out this dress, I knew it was me. It’s definitely an easy-to-wear dress for work, which is what I have done multiple times already. I also wore it on Christmas Day for my family lunch. The dress is from Reitmans’ Willow & Thread line which is focused on work wear.

Here are a few of the items coming up for spring that caught my eye. If you pop into a Reitmans store or shop online, I hope you find something that is #ReallyYou! And, if you’re an influencer/blogger/Instagrammer, I encourage your to post photos that are #ReallyYou!

wrap tops – $49.90
long sweater – $49.90

Many thanks to the Reitmans team for sending me a lovely package of goodies. All opinions are my own.

Two for Tuesday: Sequins

Who has been wearing more sparkle and shine than usual this season? I have! Any time I can add a little more jazz to my evening party outfits, I have. The holiday season is a great time to bring out the bling.

sequined dress

sequined hat

These two items are in the luxury category, but there are affordable sequin options at stores like H&M, The Bay, ASOS, and Forever21.

The Friday Five: 5 Affordable Party Outfits

Years and years after blogs came into my life, I still read them on a daily basis. I love reading people’s perspectives on food, fashion, travel, and everything in between. That said, some things really do annoy me about some blogs. One of the things that bothers me is that some of my favourite bloggers continuously put together outfits that cost thousands (and thousands) of dollars. And when recent “holiday party outfits” posts featured dresses in the thousands, I thought I should have a look around to see what other party outfits I could find at a more affordable price point.

Here are some of the gems that I found that are under $200CAD and that are good for a variety of occasions this holiday season.

dot minidress, $140.23CAD

ruffled jumpsuit, $178CAD

fit and flare dress, $70CAD

sleeveless dress, $109CAD

sweater dress, $62CAD

Have a great weekend, everyone!

The Friday Five: 5 Pretty Earrings

If you’re looking for a set of pretty earrings, I have five lovely pairs for you to consider. They’d make beautiful gifts for friends, family, or yourself. And they’d be great for holiday outfits, too!

Amariah flower earrings, $38, Bauble Bar

metal petal flower earrings, $265CAD, Moda Operandi

diamond pavé cluster flower earrings, $895USD, 1stDibs

BaubleBar Perla resin flower earrings, $38.40USD (on sale), Anthropologie

Italian flower pearl vermeil drop earrings, $151USD, 1stDibs

Have a great weekend, everyone!

The Friday Five: Fancy Footwork

This Friday has come around very quickly. For no reason in particular, this week has just gone by in a flash. Waterloo is now covered in a blanket of snow, which, yes, is pretty, but reminds me that this is the first of many snowfalls from now until March. Sigh. It is also a sign that the holidays – and parties – are right around the corner. Anyone need a new pair of fancy shoes for such parties? If so, have a look at this stunning collection of sparkling footwear.

Two for Tuesday: Structured Curves

Sorry about that little technical hiccup with yesterday’s announcement post. I thought the solution was going to be much more time consuming than it was, but my web host Namespro worked magic and resolved my tech issue quickly. I have been a loyal Namespro customer for many years now (too many to count), and I am always grateful for their service (which is always explained very clearly, I might add). Anyhow, I’m back in blogging action, which makes me happy.

So here we go with today’s potentially surprising duo.

Two for Tuesday: Lace

Who tuned into the wedding between Chiara Ferragni (fashion blogger, CEO and more!) and Fedez (Italian rapper)? It was magical. And extravagant. And extra large! Chiara’s first wedding dress (why have one when you can have two? Designed by Dior!) was made up of a lace bodysuit and a massive tulle skirt. The hours and skill that went into this dress are impressive.

It seems that lace – and lace circle shapes – may be something we’ll see quite a bit of in the months ahead. Here’s just one sample of the design in a pair of affordable tights.

Fashion: Polka Dot Shoes

Hello dear readers! I’m back! Did you miss your daily dose of white? I did! I took an extended blog break because after I got back from Florida, I was so busy with start of school year (I don’t have kids, but I do teach at the university) and my book that my one week blog break turned into two turned into three. But all that is in the past. I’m back, and I’m eager to return to my blogger way of life.

So Labour Day has come and gone. Does this mean there’s no room for white until Victoria Day in May? I think not! My love of white continues year-round, and I am all for breaking the “no white after labour day” rule for fashion and home decor. There are so many shades of white that the colour is great year-round! Just yesterday, in fact, I proudly wore my white sneakers while I shopped around Cambridge with a friend. Embrace white, I say!

Speaking of white shoes, my jaw dropped when I saw these party shoes on one of my favourite fashion bloggers – Blair Eadie (of Atlantic Pacific). They sure are fun!

Here’s hoping these fun shoes are a sign of good things to come this school year!

Gift Guide: Back to School

I know. I know. It’s only early August, and I’m talking about back to school. This does not meant that the summer is nearing an end. It just means that we’ve got back to school shopping on the brain! As per usual, I’m happy to welcome Daniela back to the blog. She’s a whiz at gift guides, and her Back to School Gift Guide certainly doesn’t disappoint.

***

Whether you’re sending your children off to nursery school or Montessori or they are heading back to grade school this September, this list of must-have back to school items will ensure your child is well prepared for the year ahead.

First up is an item from the proudly Canadian Green’s Your Colour. I have owned a Green’s Your Colour bottle for a few years (and even featured it in this holiday gift guide). I use it daily for cold beverages in the summer and hot infused teas in the winter. This food grade bottle has the capacity to store many food and beverage items. Buying your child one for their upcoming school year will ensure they have a superior water bottle that can easily  store a hot lunch or snack without leaving any flavour residue after it has been washed. I can attest to its durability and quality as mine is now three years old, and it still looks and functions like it’s new.

Dino Stomper, $35 CAD, Green’s Your Colour

Next up is an item from another Canadian company – So Young. The company’s  owner,  Catherine, is not only passionate about what she does, but she has overcome so much in her life. Read her inspirational story. So Young’s line of products is not only well-made and well-priced, but it has the cutest selection of bags for you, your toddler, or your child. Here’s the child-sized backpack, but note that many backpacks come in a toddler version as well.

backpack, $55 CAD, So Young

And don’t forget to add a So Young lunch bag and ice pack while you are at it!

unicorn lunch box, $35 CAD, So Young

ice pack, $13 CAD, So Young

Next up is this great lunchbox that ensures you can pack your child a variety of food items while keeping everything separate in an all-in-one container. The company – PlanetBox – has three options, but the Shuttle or Rover are recommended for children.

Rover lunch box, $55.95 USD, PlanetBox

Tiny Trendsetter is a Toronto-based store that offers shipping across Canada and the United States. The store has you covered with the trendiest styles for your little ones. Tiny Trendsetter carries many mainstream labels we all love, but what I love most is their focus on smaller independent labels.

A must-have for fall and winter are these super comfy feels-like-joggers-but-looks-like-jeans. The Beau Hudson “jegs†are not only super stylish, but they are also super easy for your child to put on and off themselves, making for easier mornings (and easier washroom breaks at school, too!).

Beau Hudson Jegs, $59.99 CAD, Tiny Trendsetter

This packable, 100% waterproof jacket should be a staple in your child’s backpack. It is good for wind and rain ensuring your child is always ready for weather changes.

Packable jacket, $54.99 CAD, Tiny Trendsetter

A staple for my own child’s wardrobe is this zip-up hoodie from Toronto’s Mini Mioche. I have replaced my daughter’s hoodie every time she outgrows it as it’s light enough for her to wear all seasons, and she is always cozy. Those early fall mornings will call for an extra layer, and this hoodie, which comes in many colours, is the perfect wardrobe staple for back to school. What’s even better is that it is designed and made right in Toronto.

hoodie, $48 CAD, Mini Mioche

Hope you enjoyed my back to school gift guide! Until next time, happy shopping!

***

Thanks for this gift guide, Daniela! Of course I, too, enjoy a nice water bottle, since I’m never without one, and the little packable rain jacket reminds me of my old K-Way jacket!

Two for Tuesday: The Belt Bag

One of my friends (hi Jess!) loves a good fanny pack. I used to poke fun at this little accessory, but now (just like I did as a young kid in the 80s) completely understands the appeal. With the fanny pack, you must be strict as to what you can carry (therefore avoiding heavy handbags) and your hands remain free (for coffee, dog walking, shopping bags). What do you think? A great little accessory or one to skip?

Trivia Thursday: The Shirtdress

It’s highly likely that every woman has some version of a shirtdress in their closets right now. It’s an easy-to-wear dress for work and leisure, it’s flattering, and it’s available in a range of colours, fabrics, and patterns. The shirtdress is now a classic dress design that came to us in the 1950s from Christian Dior where the full skirt was paired with crinoline for a little extra pouf. The style – noted by collars and the shirt-style – was inspired by menswear at the time. Now, we see many clothing brands creating their own variations.

Fashion: Gingham Galore

Last Friday, I went out of my fashion comfort zone, and I pulled out an all-over gingham outfit. I already had these pieces in my wardrobe, but it was only recently that I considered putting them together.

Two for Tuesday: Praise for Polka Dots

Yes, I have polka dots on my mind again. I was at Bed Bath and Beyond over the weekend, and I noticed Kate Spade’s polka dot bath collection, and I’m wondering if I should add a few pieces to my new laundry/bathroom.

Kate Spade towel set

And then I saw Teggy French in this sweet polka dot top, and I thought she looked great.

Fashion: Anthropologie in Black and White

I scan the Anthropologie site much too often. I enjoy the styling of the home items mostly, but I do get caught in the clothes, too. Honestly, I rarely buy anything from Anthropologie because the clothing styles are generally too boho for my day-to-day wear, but I still get sucked into the site, and lately, I spotted so many pretty black and white pieces that I think would fit seamlessly into my wardrobe (prices in USD).

The Friday Five: Cashmere

Cashmere is the ultimate in winter wear as far as I’m concerned. I can feel put together and warm when I’m wearing a cashmere sweater. Cashmere is super soft, and it doesn’t itch, so it’s a great option for sweaters, cardigans, and turtlenecks, too.

I’m ending the week with five lovely cashmere sweaters at a range of price points.

The Friday Five: Scotch & Soda

Have you heard of the brand Scotch & Soda? I know that there’s at least one location in Toronto’s Eaton Centre, but beyond that, I don’t know where other stores are located. The few times I’ve been in, I’ve liked a lot of the merchandise, but it’s not a regular go-to shop for me. The other day, though, I was having a little online browse, and I came back to Scotch & Soda’s site. There are plenty of cute items currently in stock, but here are five white pieces that caught my attention.

Fashion: #WhiteCabanaStyle

For the past couple of years, I’ve been documenting some of my outfits on Instagram using #WhiteCabanaStyle. People seem to enjoy them, and it’s been amusing for me to look back at my outfits to see what I like or don’t like about them. What is easily noticeable as you scroll through the hundreds of outfits is that, regardless of season, black and white are my go-to colour options. Are you really surprised?

What do you think of fashion/style/outfit posts? Would you like to see more/less of #WhiteCabanaStyle on the blog (and Instagram)? Be honest. If it’s just-too-much-Jordana for your day, let me know!
