As you may recall, last week I hosted an amazing giveaway sponsored by Glenn Dixon Home by Korhani Home and Caviar20.

Today, I get to announce the winner! But before I do, let’s do a bit of a review, shall we?

Glenn Dixon’s designs for Korhani Home are inspired by nature, and this white marble carpet is an example of nature at its best. Just look at how marble is harvested (via Jennifer). Here’s the marble rug (the Stonefield) in place at Art Toronto’s VIP Lounge last week:

Finally, the winner of the Glenn Dixon Home by Korhani Home is:

Screen Shot 2014-11-02 at 8.09.19 PMLucky number 54…aka Kristen…who left a comment and a tweet!

comment-rug-giveaway

Kristen thought that Caviar20’s Hans Wegner Cigar Chair and the Harold Town “Toy Horse #54” 1978 print would pair nicely with the rug. I think it’s pretty cool that the print is labelled #54 and Kristen’s entry number was 54. Wild!

Congratulations, Kristen! Look for an email in your inbox soon!

Thanks to Caviar20, Korhani Home, and Glenn Dixon Home by Korhani Home. Thanks especially to Troy and Andrea.

Giveaway: Caviar20 + Glenn Dixon Home by KORHANI Home

Well, have I got a treat for you this Monday morning! I’ve teamed up with Caviar20 and Korhani to giveaway a beautiful area rug designed by Canadian design star Glenn Dixon. Excited? So am I! Happy Monday, dear readers!

If you had a chance to stop by Art Toronto this weekend, you may have noticed Dixon’s Korhani rugs in the VIP Lounge designed by Troy Seidman of Caviar20. If not, here’s a quick peek:

art-toronto-caviar20-korhani-Lounge-2 art-toronto-caviar20-korhani-Lounge-5 Art-Toronto-Caviar20-Korhani

Quite a piece of art, isn’t it? The 8×12 rug would look equally interesting in a bedroom, living room, or dining room. Don’t you agree? Dixon’s Korhani rugs will officially launch in 2015.

Since I worked with Troy from Caviar20 to arrange this post, I just had to think about what pieces I would pick from Caviar20 to pair with the rug. Here are my top choices:

Caviar20-RobertSonneman-AluminumSpots_large

Robert Sonneman “Aluminum Spot” pair of lamps, $750

Caviar20-ZebraPlanters-5_10d8421e-c7f1-44ce-98c8-298842ebbfc5_large

Es Keramik “Zebra Planters”, $175

Caviar20-Carl_Rose-WhiteDecanterDuo-1_large

Karl and Rose white decanter duo, $475

Caviar20-TahirMahmood-SarodLamp-icon_large

Tahir Mahmood “Sarod” table lamp, $495

Oh, so divine!

Giveaway details:

1. To enter, leave a comment letting me know what piece from Caviar20 you think would look perfect with the white marble rug.

2. For an extra entry, tweet about this giveaway (e.g., I just entered a @KorhaniHome + @Caviar20 giveaway on @WhiteCabana).

3. Giveaway ends Friday, October 31, 2014. Good luck!

Winner: Panasonic Giveaway

Thanks to those who entered and commented on last month’s Panasonic feature & giveaway. I am happy to announce that Boba is the lucky winner of the stainless steel microwave. Have a look at her old-world + modern appliances kitchen design. I love that the induction cooktop and modern wall oven look perfectly at home among the oriental rug, rustic wood table, and beautiful blue fabrics. I also love the inclusion of a classic white KitchenAid stand mixer and white Danby (I think) pots. Let us know how you love your new microwave, Boba!

Many thanks to Panasonic for sponsoring this giveaway and to Candace B. for her coordination.

Giveaway: #PanasonicStyle

Hi all. Was the weekend a good one? Did you cook up a storm? How do you feel about getting creative this Monday morning? Good. I’m glad. Have I got a contest for you!

PanasonicStyle

I wrote about Panasonic’s induction products last week and this week I’m challenging you (it’s an easy challenge, I swear) to create your own Panasonic kitchen style inspiration board using the Panasonic induction cooktop and convection oven.

Here’s my inspiration board to serve an example:

White-Cabana-Panasonic-Style

White Cabana’s #PanasonicStyle

My inspiration board includes items that are smooth, sleek, and highly functional – like the Panasonic appliances, the Kaiser Idell light, and the Bialetti coffee maker. I’m also inspired by natural sunshine, so this board includes gorgeous large windows. The fresh flowers promise the arrival of springtime and growth. The fresh squid ink pasta and black and white art show the beauty that comes from making things by hand.

But enough about my inspiration…it’s your turn!

What would you include in your #PanasonicStyle kitchen inspiration board? Go ahead, create one. When you’re done with your board, email it to me along with your contact info and I’ll add it to the #PanasonicStyle Pinterest board. That’s all you have to do to enter the contest!

So, you probably want to know what’s up for grabs, right? This is your chance to win…

NN-GD693S(CPH)_Front_sp1219_(Final)

A Panasonic Mid-Size Genius Inverter Microwave! The winner will receive the microwave as well as the trim kit (so that you can mount the microwave above the stove/over the counter). This prize is a biggie – valued at $470! Um, yeah. I told you it was going to be worth your pinning efforts! Who doesn’t want a new microwave, right?

To recap:

1. Create an inspiration board (i.e., collage) featuring the Panasonic induction cooktop or convection oven.

2. Email me your board – whitecabana [at] gmail [dot] com

3. The contest deadline is Friday February 21st, 2014 and it’s open to Canadian residents (over the age of 18, excluding Quebec).

Your popcorn kernels will thank you for entering and so will I!

Many thanks to Panasonic for sponsoring this giveaway and related posts.

Marketplace: The Panasonic Induction Cooktop

I recently learned that Panasonic has introduced a new induction cooktop. Induction heat has been around for years, but I feel like it’s only gaining momentum for home kitchens now.

Panasonic-Induction cooktop

Panasonic’s new induction cooktop sort of looks like a television, doesn’t it? So sleek and shiny, it is! Panasonic says, “The induction cooktop features infrared-sensors for precise temperature control and electrostatic glass touch technology for easy operation.” The cooktop also has the ability to rapidly generate heat. The fact that the induction cooktop doesn’t use flames or elements has got to mean that it’s pretty darn safe to operate*. Panasonic assures its customers that the cooktop surface remains cool to the touch, except just beneath where the cookware sits. The cooktop’s flat surface is much easier to clean than a traditional stove with burners and (those darn) burner guards.

But that’s not all that I’ve learned. Panasonic is also sharing news of its new convection oven.

Panasonic-induction-HL-BD825

I love that, like the cooktop, the convection oven is so sleek. It looks perfectly stylish in an all-white kitchen. Use of the convection oven should result in “even baking, browning, and crisping” as well as juicy and flavourful poultry and roasted meat. I wish it promised that it would cook for me every night. 🙂

I’d love to hear your view, but I am especially curious to know if anyone has an induction stove. Well worth it? Did you buy a completely new cookware set?

Come on back on Monday to learn about a not-to-be missed giveaway that I’ve organized with the good folks from Panasonic. Your kitchen will definitely want you to enter this one!

*I have never actually cooked on an induction cooktop.

Event: Octaspring + Pinterest Contest

You may remember that last week I announced Octaspring’s current contest. Use Pinterest to create an #OctaspringDream bedroom board and post the link on Facebook…that’s all it takes to enter! The prize is a great one…a set of Octaspring pillows plus a $250 gift card to the Home Depot. Can I mention again that I am one of the judges of the contest? Am I excited? Of course I am. I’m very much looking forward to seeing what your must-haves are in your dream bedroom!

While I cannot enter the contest, I did want to create a dream board. It’s been a handy board, actually, considering the fact that I’m currently rearranging a lot in my home and the master bedroom still needs some attention. Here’s a sneak peek at my #OctaspringDream bedroom Pinterest board:

WhiteCabana_OctaspringDreamBedroom

Have a full look at it here.

As you’ll notice, some of my bedroom must-haves are: art, windows, sunlight, excellent linens, texture, cool lighting, beautiful closet, pretty pyjama sets, flowers, an assortment of pillows (I’m currently sleeping on the Octaspring Evolution – I’ll post a review soon!), and a bed that is made (I cannot leave the house with a messy bed. How about you?).

The #OctaspringDream bedroom contest ends November 18th Friday December 13th so get a-pinning!

Event: Octaspring Bedroom Pinterest Contest

Who doesn’t love to get a good sleep? It’s unlikely that anyone would choose to have an evening of tossing and turning over a calm sleep when you wake up feeling really well-rested. But did you know that, according to Statistics Canada, an estimated 3.3 million Canadians – or 1 in 7 people across the country – have expressed difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.

I love to sleep – especially on the weekend when I don’t set my alarm clock. When I’m at a great hotel, I love to get cozy under the covers and test out every pillow.

Which brings me to the focus of today’s post – pillows. The Octaspring pillow collection, to be precise.

These aren’t just any pillows, people.

Octaspring-pillows

Okay, from the above photo, the Octaspring pillows may not look that much different from the pillows you currently have on your bed. But look how they’re made…

pillows-memory-evolution_v2_zoom__09953_thumb

Those are memory foam Octapillow springs which are designed to “cradle the head in blissful comfort” in a cool and airy fashion. This pillow looks like it was designed to set you up for some great dreaming.

So how did this pillow come to be? Let me share some info about its history. Octaspring comes from Dormeo, a Belgium bedding brand created by Willy Poppe. Dormeo – what a great name, right? Dormeo is the Latin word for sleep. It is very similar to dormir (French), dormire (Italian), and dormir (Spanish), which are all infinitive verbs meaning to sleep. Okay, getting back to the point here…

Dormeo-octaspring

Dormeo, available in more than 30 countries around the world, introduced Octaspring in Europe just a few years ago and is now coming to Canada through an exclusive partnership with Sleep Country Canada (insert catchy jingle – you’re singing it in your head right along with me, right?) (Dormez-Vous in Quebec). The Octaspring will be making its appearance in more than 150 Sleep Country stores across Canada. You can read more about Octaspring’s history here.

Octaspring-pillow-technology

Octaspring Contest:

To celebrate the introduction of Octaspring in the Canadian marketplace, Octaspring is currently running a great contest which includes me (and some other bloggers) as guest judges! Hooray!

Here are the details…

You’ll have until Monday November 18th Friday December 13th to create a Pinterest board focused on your ideal bedroom. Once your #OctaspringDream board has been created, submit the link to your board on the Octaspring Facebook page (under the Dream Bedroom tab) and fill out this contest entry form. Don’t forget to follow Octaspring on Pinterest and Facebook so you can stay in the (sleepy) loop.

The winner of the contest will receive a $250 Home Depot gift card and a set of Evolution Plus pillows.

Go on, get pinning! I’m so looking forward to seeing what makes up your perfect bedroom.

20 Below & Giveaway: Palomino Blackwing Pearl Pencils

By the time you read this I will be in London, Ontario, presenting my 5 years of PhD work to a conference room of examiners. I’m emotional. I’m nervous, excited, happy, sad, proud, confident, and scared. I’m mostly thrilled. If I am successful then I will change my name to Dr. Jordana. If I am unsuccessful, I will cry. Please send positive vibes my way. A lot of them s’il vous plait!

7_14_13_MarkAddisonSmith

It seems quite fitting that on this very important day (keep calm, carry on) I write a post about office supplies. I have used SO many different types of office supplies in my 12 years of post-secondary education. Today I’m sharing some news about pencils. Beautifully functioning white pencils. The best. They are the Palomino Blackwing Pearl pencils. Palomino just introduced this line of pencils and anyone who loves design and the smooth writing style will be sure to pick up packages of these!

BlackwingPearlCroppedPalomino Blackwing Pearl pencils, $19.95 for 12, Palomino

For those of you who love history…”The Blackwing pencil was first manufactured in the 1930s by Eberhard Faber, but was discontinued in 1998 when the machine that created the distinctive square ferrule (the crimped metal that holds the eraser) broke and could not be repaired.” What happened next? Well, Palomino bought the brand, sorted out the ferrule manufacturing, and brought the pencil back! There’s more to learn about the Blackwing legend and about who uses this pencil.

The Palomino Blackwing Pearl can be bought online at Pencils. If you’re in the Toronto area, you can buy Palomino at the following supply stores:

1. Phidon Pens Limited (Cambridge)
2. Laywine’s (Toronto)
3. Midoco Art & Office Supplies (Toronto)
4. The Paper Place (Toronto)
5. Wonder Pens (Toronto)

Did I jump at the chance to test these out? Of course I did! And I’m a fan. They function beautifully and the square ferrule stands out in my collection of classic HB2 pencils!

And now – here’s a chance for you to test them out too…

GIVEAWAY:

Palomino is offering to send one lucky winner a package of the new Palomino Blackwing Pearl pencils. To enter this giveaway, simply finish the following statement: The last thing I wrote by hand was…. Add your sentence to the comment section below. Contest ends on Monday August 26, 2013. This contest is open to readers in North America. Good luck and happy writing!

Thank you to Palomino & Kim S. for offering this giveaway.

Books: Blurb + Giveaway

I have been raving to my friends about Blurb ever since I wrote my first book for my nephew’s second birthday. For that book, I illustrated pictures of fruit, scanned them to my computer, and then uploaded them to a Blurb template. I then wrote the vocabulary to match (in three languages of course – that’s my academic side coming through!), finalized a few details, and pressed publish. In a matter of weeks, my first Blurb book arrived in my mailbox and I spent quite a bit of time showing it off before I handed it over to my nephew.

a preview of my first Blurb book – a multilingual book about fruit

It probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise that I have since published a few other books for each of my nephew’s birthdays. I am pleased with how each of them has turned out (and I think my nephews are too) and Blurb has been an easy company to work with.

customizable copyright & dedication pages

sssshh…this one still hasn’t been opened…it’s for Reef’s second birthday next week

here are my nephews reading Duke’s third birthday book about shapes

While I have not made my books available to the public, this is definitely a possibility with Blurb and something to pursue if you have written something that you want to share with others. On the other hand, if you’re at a loss for words but you want to compile photos from your last vacation, then consider Blurb the place to do so. The company offers quite a few design options, page templates, and bounding possibilities.

Want to get started? Well, look no further! Blurb is offering one lucky reader a $35 promo code to use toward a Blurb book. To enter this giveaway simply leave a comment and tell us what type of Blurb book you would like to create. And do it quick – this contest ends on Thursday June 7th, 2012. Winner will be chosen at random.

Note: Contest is open to Canadian residents only.
