The Friday Five: Blog Love

I don’t often give shout outs to blogs in posts because I feel like that’s what my blogroll is for. If you have a peek over at that list you’ll see some of the blogs that I enjoy reading on a daily and weekly basis. But there are so many great white (and colouful) blogs out there and, probably like you, I am always stumbling upon some new-to-me blogs. Today I’d like to shine the Friday Five spotlight on some of these gems.

Sous Style, headed up by Australian-born, Brooklyn-based Pippa Lord, is a great resource for inspiring home decor and recipes. The blog has some amazing regular features like Wake Up Call and Cook For Me. And I especially like the blog’s manifesto (copied below).

I only came across 79 Ideas, a blog written by Radostina, a graphic-designer based in Prague (hello – I love Prague). It’s such a soft blog and so pleasant to read. I enjoyed reading through Radostina’s likes and dislikes, some of which are copied below. Be sure to flip through her e-mag – it is full of the most beautiful photos.

Sarah’s blog, A Beach Cottage is gorgeous because it includes two of the things that I love: white  and the beach. Really, do you really need more convincing to go read it?

Tenessee-based Kayce Hughes is a designer, blogger, and mother of seven. I have no idea how she gets everything done. Kudos to her. Her blog is super colourful so if you need a colour fix go have a peek! Of course I’m most attracted to her more monochromatic photos (see DIY below).

Finally, Icy White is a wonderful all-white tumblr (there are a few others out there as well). It is an excellent source of white inspiration (in addition to White Cabana, of course!).

What blogs have you discovered lately? Let me know in the comments section! It’s the Canada Day long weekend here so I’ve got some time to catch up on reading (outside, of course)!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Music: Wrestlers by Hot Chip

I’ve had Wrestlers by Hot Chip on repeat for much of this week.

I don’t even know anything about wrestling. But I like the song and I like the matching black & white video. (And I guess I also kind of feel like I’ve been in a wrestling match with my dissertation this month! Ha!)

What have you been listening to these days?

Architecture: London, Ontario

Okay – it’s time to take a break from all these beautyrelated posts I’ve been writing. Let’s get back to design and architecture! I’m taking you to London, Ontario today…

When I first moved from Toronto to London four years ago, I have to admit that I really didn’t like it. It’s not that I’m one of those “Toronto is the center of the universe” people but I didn’t really get a great vibe from the city and I found it really hard to meet people. Fast forward 4 years and I now find myself really enjoying my time here. I love that I live in the downtown core – close to independent shops and cafés, and there certainly are a lot of interesting things to see.

The architecture of the houses in my neighbourhood continue to surprise me. The houses that have obviously been well-taken care of have amazing details. Even the not so well-loved houses have great architectural details and I like to imagine who has lived in them and what stories each house might have to share.

Like I said in my last post about London architecture, many of the original houses in the city are made of yellow or red brick. I think they look equally striking in black and white.
